When clinical psychologists Deborah Scott and Joan Sophie first stepped into The Selfhelp Home, they knew they had found something special. “The warmth of the community, the exceptional staff, and the right size of the home immediately drew us in,” says Joan, seated in their thoughtfully renovated apartment that combines a one-bedroom and studio space.
Their story embodies the vibrant, engaged lifestyle that defines The Selfhelp Home community. Partners for 37 years, these accomplished professionals first met while working at a community mental health center in South Bend, Indiana. After moving to Chicago in 1989, they built a successful joint clinical psychology practice and made their home in the Edgewater neighborhood. When considering their next chapter, Selfhelp’s location felt like staying within their beloved community.
Their journey together is marked by beautiful milestones. After retiring thirteen years ago, they celebrated their commitment by getting married in Iowa, where same-sex marriage was already legal, bringing both families together in joyful celebration.
Today, at ages 81 and 83, Joan and Deborah embrace everything Selfhelp has to offer. You’ll find them at many daily and weekly programs and events, including Sunday afternoon concerts, engaging in Friday current events discussions, participating in poetry groups, and attending art history lectures. Joan particularly enjoys Jewish Studies programs, while their shared Buddhist meditation practice adds another dimension to community life – they’re even exploring starting a meditation group for fellow residents.
“We’re learning to be with people of all abilities, to see the wholeness of each person,” they reflect. “As we age, there can be a tendency toward isolation, but living here offers an opportunity to become more compassionate and appreciate people for who they are at any stage of life.”
From sharing meals with their regular dining companions under the “magical” direction of Sofia Metovic, the Director of Dining Services, to attending Millennium Park concerts and Lyric Opera performances, Deborah and Joan have found more than just a place to live – they’ve found a true home where they feel accepted and valued as a couple.
Their message to others considering The Selfhelp Home is simple and heartfelt: “We’re happy to be here.” The security of knowing they’ve found their permanent home, regardless of what the future holds, brings them peace of mind and allows them to continue living life to its fullest.
At The Selfhelp Home we are dedicated to enhancing the lives of our residents through care, connection, and community. To learn more about Selfhelp, please visit us online or contact us directly at (773) 271-0300 for questions or to schedule a tour.
