Caring people, caring environment, this is a not for profit faith based facility with staff who remain for years.

Administration and Board of Directors are all very involved, dedicated to ensure Selfhelp provides up to date and attentive care to residents and patients. My mother, who had dementia, was a resident the last years of her life and Selfhelp made those years good and enjoyable for her. You will not find better care anywhere else!

Our family cannot thank The Selfhelp Home enough for the support and care they gave our dad.

Our dad suffered a stroke and needed significant rehabilitation after being released from the hospital. From the minute we contacted Sheila Bogen, Selfhelp’s executive director who put us in touch with Elizabeth Sanchez, who heads admissions, the wheels to provide him the care and services he needed were put in motion.

Everything was coordinated without delay and with Efrat Dallal’s assistance, our mom was even able to “hotel” in a lovely “Respite Room” to be near to dad during his stay. His care was truly a team effort. From the nurses, Raclyn, Joy, Aaron and their colleagues; Sofia and her dietary team; all the wonderful and caring CNAs; Paul, Elizabeth and the other skilled physical and occupational therapists; his care was unparalleled. We also very much appreciated Tom’s efforts in coordinating many of the details necessary to ensure smooth transitions. And Erica Edwards, Selfhelp’s social worker, ensured that everything was in place not only while dad was at Selfhelp, but for his safe return home. Each and every team involved in his care was outstanding.

In a time where many facilities are short-staffed, The Selfhelp Home’s teams were always available with caring, skilled, safe and professional support. Our family would recommend them without hesitation for any loved ones that need rehabilitation assistance.

This place truly cares about their customers! I am 45 years old and from Tennessee. I have dealt with knee issues for years and finally found a doctor in Chicago that could help me.

The only problem was that this doctor had to do surgery and he insisted I had to stay in a skilled nursing facility for 4 weeks after surgery. I visited 3 skilled facilities including this one before my surgery. I found this one to be more professional and clean!

From the first day I arrived my nurse Aaron and his CNA’s treated me like I was family. They explained everything to me upfront and made sure I had everything I needed to enjoy my stay there. My first impressions was that this is short-lived. Give it two weeks and the customer service would fade. 4 weeks later I had no complaints. They treated me with the same respect and customer service from the first day to the last. I also appreciated their physical therapy department. Paul worked with me with patients but also pushed me in order to get the results my doctor wanted to see. Paul is a true professional and has experience in his field.

I will always recommend this facility to anyone who needs a short-term therapy or long-term stay.

My mother has been at The Selfhelp Home for a little over 10 years. She started out in assisted living and is now in the long-term care unit. I have only high praise for this wonderful place.

The staff has changed since she first came here but not the care. The people here have been wonderful to her. She likes the food a lot and for someone who is usually finding fault she always says she is lucky to be there. If there was something higher than five stars, that is where I would rate it.

The Selfhelp Home is a wonderful warm setting for my Dad. Staff is universally kind and attentive. Dad says the meals are delicious.

They have gone “above and beyond” during COVID to keep the residents safe and entertained. Recommend The Selfhelp Home wholeheartedly.

My mom has been a resident at Selfhelp for 3 years. She speaks often about the wonderful staff, their kindness and willingness to go the extra mile in helping with any problem the resident faces.

She also enjoys many of the activities. The staff has done an excellent job during the pandemic, setting and revising policies to protect a very vulnerable population.

My mother, Adele, was a resident of The Selfhelp Home for about five years. I found the care for her to be fantastic.

Also, although she was getting weaker by the day (she died after five years in the home in 2017 at 103), she was relatively happy and knew that she was being well taken care of. I cannot say enough good things about The Selfhelp Home and its leadership and staff.

The Selfhelp Home has been a wonderful place for my 94-year-old mother-in-law. She’s been there about 4 years now and is involved with all the activities.

The staff really cares and checks in with her often. I like the fact that when she went from Independent to Assisted, she stayed in her own apartment. She didn’t have to move. The residents and the staff are almost completely vaccinated and they had very few issues even before vaccinations. Staff turn-over is low because they are a mensch-y place. I would recommend The Selfhelp Home for yourself or loved one.

I wish I could give Selfhelp 10 stars.  They truly deserve it!  Selfhelp provides such extraordinary attention and personalized care for my mother that I rarely worry about her which is a blessing

From the administrative staff to the floor attendants, the amount of patience and competence that all demonstrate in dealing with their residents is a lesson for all of us. My mother can be critical but I have never heard her complain about Selfhelp. I hope that when the day comes for me to require a similar facility, I will be fortunate enough to find a place with the level of care that they provide.

Mom and I are so grateful for the amazing staff at SHH. We were so fortunate to be able to get Dad (and Mom) in when we realized it was no longer safe for Mom and Dad to be in the house.

Your staff took amazing care of Dad and we are forever thankful for that. When my friend and I first toured SHH with Jonathan we were amazed as to how clean the place is and even on upper floors, spotless and no smell. With the help of Efrat, you constructed a beautiful apt for Mom. Every one is always so helpful and friendly and kind! Nothing is ever impossible. We appreciate Rey and Joni and Sheila and Liza and Ivory and Tom and we miss Felix (to mention a few) for helping Mom with whatever need she has. Mom loves the theme days! She also loves working in the office and her social time on the beautiful deck. I can finally sleep and night knowing she is safe and not alone. She’s a bright star to all that know her, thanks for selecting her to be in your ad 🙂 A million thanks to all of you for all the sacrifices you made everyday to care for the residents, keeping them happy and safe.

The communication with staff, especially during this difficult time, has been terrific. I feel that someone is always available and interested in helping my mom with anything she needs.

(She is just too hesitant to ask.) Thank you for all you do during this pandemic. I miss my mom but have not worried for a minute about her saving. Keep up the terrific work!!!

Healthcare POA

The Selfhelp Home is definitely the first choice for a post hospital stay. The staff greets you with a smile, a warm reception and always thoughtful practices.

Irv continues to rave about the excellent PT he has received. He says, “Boy, they work you out!” His other great announcement is how attentive the staff is. “They won’t let me walk by myself. My nurse is always in here quick when I need her.” As his Healthcare POA, I am so very pleased with the professionalism and fabulous patient care I’ve witnessed. I have had nothing but exceptional service from the front desk to the floor.

The professionalism, cleanliness, the smiles and the courtesy calls are so beyond some experiences I’ve had with SNF’s and rehabilitation facilities. Not only am I pleased, but the patient (Irwin L.) is pleased. He was taken to the hospital for a possible stroke two days ago. After all the tests shared no stroke, he was given the option of staying there for a few days or return to Selfhelp. He says, “I’d rather go back to Selfhelp. There I’ll have someone always close and the food is good.”

My mother, Adele Shore Bernstein, was at The Selfhelp Home for five years, entering at the age of around 98 and living there for five years until she passed away at age 103.

I have the highest regard and greatest appreciation for the attention, care and kindness she received from the wonderful staff at the home. They were all wonderful and those close to my mother are very grateful for the care she received at the home. She hardly had any complaints, even thought she was in bad shape and very low spirits (through no fault of the home). The home did its best to maintain her physical condition and boost her spirits.

My mother lived at The Selfhelp Home for eight years. She was a Holocaust survivor and lived in Florida. At age 89, my brother and I felt she shouldn’t be alone.

My brother lives in Washington, DC and I live in Chicago. I had heard of SHH And thought she would be a good fit. Despite the difficult initial adjustment, she fits in great. The environment is warm and cultural, offering weekly concerts, book clubs, political discussions and an array of residents with fascinating histories and supportive families.

The staff has been there for many years which speaks to how well they are treated and at the same time they treat the residents with loving care! I would be grateful moving to SHH myself when the time comes!

My father, who is almost 90, had some ups and downs with his health prior to moving to Selfhelp. He has been in excellent health since moving to Selfhelp.

I think that is because he eats three healthy meals a day in the dining room, he exercises in a class or in the fitness room, and the staff manages his medications. My dad often comments that all of the staff are “so nice” and how much he appreciates the great quality of care. He greatly enjoys the concerts, movies, social events, sense of community, and the friendships he has made. I’m glad I chose the Selfhelp Home for him, and I have peace of mind knowing how well taken care of he is of there.

Rehab Patient

I entered the Selfhelp Home after emergency surgery for a broken leg (Femur) I was told a rehab facility was required and I had a vague awareness of The SelfHelp Home.

I called, was accommodated graciously and entered not knowing what to expect. There in no way to analyze or describe all aspects of the experience at SelfHelp but the bottom line includes the descriptive term: “superb”. No facility could do better in terms of satisfying all aspects of care and personal accommodations. It is clear that the personnel and administration of the facility are directed to achieving the goal of satisfying the patients needs as its primary objective. They succeeded for me to continue to do so for all in need of their services.

My congratulations to whoever planned the Chanukah event. It was perfection, well thought out and planned, organized and I cannot praise you enough.

For me to even pay attention and notice is one thing. But for me feeling compelled over a month later to tell you is just a small indication of how impressed I was. Thank you for a wonderful evening and the most impressive event I have ever attended in my 87 years.
