What are you studying and where? What is your focus in school?
I am currently getting my master’s in social work with a specialization in mental health at Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois Chicago.
What will you be doing at Selfhelp? What days will you be here?
At Selfhelp, I will have the opportunity to work with residents on all floors. I will be collaborating with Erica, our Director of Social Services, to conduct intake and discharge care plans and assessments for individuals on the rehabilitation floor.
I’ll also be working closely with medical providers, family members, and patients to ensure we are delivering the highest quality of care. In addition, I will support residents on the skilled, assisted, and independent living floors, offering both emotional support and help with day-to-day needs. Whether someone wants to talk through a tough day or needs assistance contacting the Social Security office—I’ll be there to help!
What is your past work experience, social work or otherwise?
Last year, I completed my social work internship at Marillac House, a nonprofit that provides outreach services for individuals of all ages. My primary focus was supporting older adults, particularly by assisting with the senior food pantry and co-facilitating a senior socialization group that met several times a month.
Through this experience, I discovered my passion for working with the older adult population and witnessed firsthand the power of connection and friendship in helping to combat both mental and physical illnesses.
Prior to this, I volunteered as a tutor for five years, working with students in grades 1–5, and I also ran my own small catering business. Currently, I work part-time as a server at a Hawaiian restaurant while balancing my responsibilities as a graduate student.
Where are you from?
I was raised in Arlington Heights, a northwest suburb of Chicago, but my parents are originally from St. Petersburg, Russia. I’ve been living in the city for the past ten years, and at this point, I feel confident calling myself a true Chicagoan!
How did you get interested in social work?
From an early age, I knew I wanted to work in the helping profession, particularly in the field of mental health. I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology from DePaul University, and when it came time to consider graduate school, I chose social work because I was drawn to the wide range of opportunities the field offers.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy cooking, swimming at the lake, traveling, listening to music and laughing with friends.
