Artists in Residence

Creativity has always found a home at Selfhelp. And now, it’s making a colorful mark in a whole new way.

Thanks to a seed grant from the Charles and M.R. Shapiro Foundation—and the generous support of Susan and Scott Pratt—we are proud to announce the formalization of our Art Therapy program, Artful Hands! This initiative is still in its early stages, but to kick things off, our residents are taking an active role in beautifying the Music Therapy room—transforming it with their hands, brushes, and imaginations.

Over the past several weeks, residents have worked side-by-side with local artist Grace Gimpel to design and paint a vibrant mural that brings life and energy into the space.

This creative expansion builds upon the foundation of our award-winning music therapy program. The Friedman/Tuber Program for Cognitive Therapies has received national recognition for its positive impact on emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being. Just as music helps residents connect, reminisce, and heal, visual art offers its own powerful path to self-expression. The new Art Therapy program will allow our residents to explore memories, celebrate identity, and experience joy through creation.

Art is more than just decoration. It’s a bridge between past and present, therapy and expression, individual voice and community connection.

Many of our residents are artists in their own right. To honor their work and enrich the environment for all who pass through, we’re also creating a Resident Art Gallery just outside the Music Therapy room. This curated display will serve as both inspiration and testament to the creativity that lives here.

Art is more than just decoration. It’s a bridge between past and present, therapy and expression, individual voice and community connection. We’re honored to help our residents bring their visions to life and proud to support programming that keeps creativity at the heart of our care.
