Our new rooftop garden is one of the city’s finest. Not only is there an incredible view of Chicago, but you can also relax with an ice cream bar while visiting with friends or reading a magazine. Our updated roof includes a surrounding garden add in the ambiance and the expansive pergola provides a shady place to relax. With a view beyond compare, residents and guests alike spend time on the rooftop watching the seasons change.
Large floor to ceiling windows provide panoramic views of the city and this penthouse, better known as the Solarium, is a great place to play cards with friends or challenge your grandchild to a game of chess or checkers. The Solarium is the gateway to the rooftop garden and is designed to be calming, warm and inviting, with earth tone colors and plenty of lush, tropical plants. There is a convenience kitchen area perfect for hosting socials during the summer months, a birthday party or just a place to gather for dessert and coffee at the end of the day. Whatever the weather, the Solarium offers the best view in the house for stargazing or enjoying the breathtaking Chicago skyline.
You’ll find an array of products on our gift shop shelves, perfect for an upcoming visit with friends or grandchildren. In addition to colorful books for young children, delicious cookies and imported candies, we also offer handmade items such as baby quilts and crafts made by residents and volunteers. A wonderful assortment of jewelry and greeting cards are also available. The gift shop is staffed by volunteers, some of whom are now residents of Selfhelp and convenient hours make it easy to stop by to pick up a quick gift or card for someone special.
Send an email to a friend, grab a book from the library and get comfortable, or just catch up with a visitor in the media room. The newly remodeled space offers two large screen computers designed with older adults in mind. One-on-one lessons will have you on Facebook or connecting with family on Zoom. The media room is fully equipped with the latest technology in vision and hearing devices that will enhance your reading experience and offer you a quiet space to relax and escape.
We’re grateful to have successfully completed the renovation of the Social Hall and opened the Gerald E. Franks Center for Culture & Community. We received a lead gift from the family of Selfhelp founder, Gerry Franks, to create a modernized social hall including updated technology and a new look that extends from wall to wall and floor to ceiling.
Residents at Selfhelp can visit our Wellness Center for a quick blood pressure check with a nurse or just ask questions to stay on top of living a healthy life. Having our own medical office gives visiting physicians, dentists, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals a place to meet with residents right at home.
Join in a feeling of community during Friday night or holiday services led by Rabbinical and lay volunteers in our Sanctuary. The Sanctuary also offers a quiet place for private worship or meditation.
Catch a Saturday night movie, a current film or one of the oldies. Whatever the film, our private theater will take you on a journey while you sink into the plush and roomy seating and enjoy the surround sound, a true state-of-the-art experience to remember.
