Founded in 1938, as Jewish families fled a Europe darkened by rising antisemitism and the threat of what was to come, the story of The Selfhelp Home is the story of Chicago’s Jewish refugee community.

Every gift to A Story Celebrated will support a permanent historical installation that preserves this story through photographs, artifacts, a pictorial timeline, and the voices of those who lived it.

This history belongs to all of us, and your gift brings it to life.

The New Historical Installation Will Feature:

  • Historical Narrative & Artifacts: Photographs, documents, and objects from founding families and residents, many never before displayed
  • Pictorial Timeline: A visual journey tracing Selfhelp’s evolution from 1938 to today
  • Permanent Donor Recognition: Honoring those who built Selfhelp, those who sustain it today, and those who will carry our story forward into the future
